Teófilo's Personal Mission Statement

• I am Teófilo de Jesús, a son of God by grace and adoption, purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ and saved from sin and death unto eternal life.  I am a human being, a man with many faults and defects, a miserable sinner, yet also a forgiven sinner.  I was saved, I am being saved, and I hope to be saved by the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord, the Lamb of God, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, True God and True Man.

• I stand in the world with a personal ideal or mission, a purpose made for me by God from all eternity, for which God has given me a set of physical, psychological, and spiritual gifts and talents to attain them.  As a far as I have been able to determine this ideal and to put it into words, this is to find and then stand at the center of God's will until the end, so that I can be like another Christ and a pillar of the Church.

• I gratefully receive with divine and catholic faith what God has revealed in Jesus Christ and what the Catholic Church has handed down to me for my salvation.  I give total assent to these truths. I hereby hand down the core of this faith to you:

• I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

• My Christian faith is also a Marian faith. I believe that Mary is the Mother, who remained ever a Virgin, of the Incarnate Word, our God and Savior Jesus Christ, and that by reason of this singular election, she was, in consideration of the merits of her Son, redeemed in a more eminent manner, preserved from all stain of original sin and filled with the gift of grace more than all other creatures. I believe that because of her close and indissoluble bond to the Mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption, the Blessed Virgin, the Immaculate, was at the end of her earthly life raised body and soul to heavenly glory and likened to her risen Son in anticipation of the future lot of all the just; and I believe that the Blessed Mother of God, the New Eve, Mother of the Church, continues in heaven her maternal role with regard to Christ's members, cooperating with the birth and growth of divine life in the souls of the redeemed.

• I am a husband, living a vowed life of marital chastity and exclusive fidelity to a loving wife until death do us part; I am also a father of two precious sons and a daughter-in-law, and a grandfather; a son, a citizen, a civil servant, and a military officer, oriented in service to others in the Spirit of Jesus Christ, with a vocation to Love God above all things and my neighbor as myself, in order to be reasonably happy on this life and eternally happy on the world to come.

• I am a Roman Catholic Christian. Though my pilgrimage within this the Church of Christ has been fraught by accidents and incidents and doesn't lack unhappy moments, and at times I've even been unfaithful to her, now, in her I take my stand, I can't do otherwise. Within her I was born, within her I intend to die with God's grace. The Catholic Church centered in Rome, the See of St. Peter, is Christ's One True Church and those who have known her as true cannot be saved if they refuse to remain within her.

• My rule of life is the Gospel of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I find two adaptations of the Gospel message as useful for study, reflection, meditation, and action.  One is ancient: the Rule of St. Benedict.  One is modern: the Scripture Rule of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity. I have been far from perfect in living out the Gospel and many times I have fallen short. Yet, I have resolved to stand up and continue walking by the Gospel's light after each fall and after each failure, in Jesus' Name.

• I maintain that "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves."

• I stand on the Western intellectual tradition that has its roots in Classical times and that saw its birth in the crucible of Jewish, Greek, and Latin thought, in the Hebrew prophets, and most importantly, in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

• I am a dwarf standing on the shoulders of giants: hence, I stand, humbly and humbled, on the towering achievements of all Catholic men and women of the past, present and future. Among these I'll mention: Sts. Augustine, Leo I, Benedict, Basil, the two Gregories, and John Chrysostom; Francis of Assisi, Domenic, and particularly, Thomas Aquinas; also, Julian of Norwich (a woman writing under a pseudonym) Sts. Teresa of Ávila, and Charles Borromeo. I'll also mention Suárez, St. Therese of Lisieux, Lord Acton, Pope Leo XIII, John Henry Newman, Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, Jacques Maritain, Etienne Gilson, Thomas Merton, John Hardon, Michael Novak, Mother Theresa of Calcutta, Popes John XXIII, John Paul the Great, and Benedict XVI.

• I am a Christian Humanist. As such, I vow not to be a stranger to any realm of human activity that is ennobling, uplifting, and truth-yielding. Hence, the arts and sciences are also my business and like before, I stand on the shoulders of giants on all fields of human endeavor, this time, too numerous to mention by name without doing justice to someone that may remain unmentioned. But they all come out in my writings. They include men and women in the fields of philosophy, literature, history, the arts, cosmology, astronomy, physics, biology, mathematics, planetary sciences, astronautics and aeronautics, psychology, military science, government, politics, human rights, and the law.

• Since I am a Christian Humanist, I also believe that I can learn from other religious traditions, philosophies and modes of thought without compromising my basic stance as a Roman Catholic Christian. Hence, I will listen to what Protestant and Eastern Orthodox Christians want to tell me, as well as Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Deists, Agnostics, Atheists, or any principled human being of good will.

• My sense of moral philosophy stems from the conviction that there are moral absolutes and that these may be discerned by natural reason, hence my reliance on Natural Law philosophy as preceding and validating positive law when I defend certain principles and certain rights.

• The sources of my political philosophy are found in the principles of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church. These are the principles of: the dignity of the human person, which is the foundation of all the other principles and content of the Church's social doctrine; the common good; subsidiarity; and solidarity. These principles, the expression of the whole truth about man known by reason and faith, are born of “the encounter of the Gospel message and of its demands summarized in the supreme commandment of love of God and neighbor in justice with the problems emanating from the life of society”. In the course of history and with the light of the Spirit, the Church has wisely reflected within her own tradition of faith and has been able to provide an ever more accurate foundation and shape to these principles, progressively explaining them in the attempt to respond coherently to the demands of the times and to the continuous developments of social life. Also, I am convinced that the separation of church and state is the best thing for the Church, but I do not assert that this entails the mandatory renunciation by the individual citizen of his core beliefs as a prerequisite for a career in public service.  I assert that the State is under the judgment of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I also defend the separations of powers, the existence of checks and balances, the rule of law, the virtues of a republican, representative democracy, and the Culture of Life. I hold the conviction that government is best when it governs the least, that all persons are equal under the law and that each one is endowed with basic, God-given, inalienable rights among which I can mention Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, from conception until death; that cultural solutions to problems take precedence over government intervention unless there is a clear and imminent danger that a basic right is being denied; that solutions should be pursued at the lowest civic level possible. I hold that everyone has a right to self-determination, to one's own personal dignity, to due process, to a civic and value-centered education, to the keeping of one's property justly earned in a free market of goods, services, and ideas, as well as erecting social protections around those who cannot legitimately compete in the free market for reason of age or infirmity.

• I believe that this fallen world is perfectible, if not by the work of man—and to me this is looking less likely each passing day—then by God's, who was, is, and is to come. This eschatological fact, however, does not absolve us from our responsibility of making this world the best possible world. I believe human history will one day come to an end, and that we all will be held responsible for all our thoughts, words, and deeds against God and Man, judged against the standard set by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. On that Last Day, God will sanction the choice we've made for Him or against Him in our earthly lives for the rest of eternity. Those of us who cling to Jesus' mercy hope to live with Him, Father, Son, and + Holy Spirit, forever and ever, in a New Heaven and a New Earth.  Maran atha! Yes, come Lord Jesus! 

 

 

Ideario Personal de Teófilo de Jesús

• Soy Teófilo de Jesús, hijo de Dios por la gracia de su adopción, rescatado por la sangre de Jesucristo y salvado del pecado y de la muerte para la vida eterna. Soy un ser humano, un hombre de muchas faltas y defectos, un miserable pecador, sí, mas perdonado. Yo soy salvo, estoy siendo salvado y espero salvarme por la gracia de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Cordero de Dios, Segunda Persona de la Santísima Trinidad, verdadero Dios y verdadero Hombre.

• Me encuentro en este mundo con el propósito de realizar un ideal personal o misión, un propósito eterno que Dios decretó para mí para lo que Él me ha dotado de un conjunto de dones y talentos físicos, mentales y espirituales para alcanzar dicho ideal. Hasta donde lo puedo expresar, este ideal consiste en encontrar y permanecer en el centro de la voluntad de Dios para que pueda ser como otro Cristo y columna de la Iglesia.

• Recibo sumamente agradecido la fe divina y católica que Dios ha revelado y que la Iglesia Católica ha guardado y transmitido de generación en generación para la salvación de las almas. Doy asentimiento total a estas verdades. Y ahora, quiero compartir contigo el núcleo de esta fe:

• Creo en un solo Dios, Padre Todopoderoso, Creador del Cielo y de la Tierra, de todo lo visible y lo invisible. Creo en un solo Señor, Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios, Nacido del Padre antes de todos lo siglos: Dios de Dios, Luz de Luz, Dios Verdadero de Dios Verdadero, engendrado , no creado, de la misma naturaleza del Padre, por quien todo fue hecho; que por nosotros, los hombres y por nuestra salvación bajó del Cielo y por obra del Espíritu Santo se encarnó de María, la Virgen y se hizo hombre; y por nuestra causa fue crucificado en los tiempos de Poncio Pilato; padeció y fue sepultado y resucitó al tercer día, según las Escrituras y subió al cielo y está sentado a la derecha del Padre y de nuevo vendrá con gloria para juzgar a vivos y muertos y su reino no tendrá fin, Creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor y dador de vida, que procede del Padre y del Hijo, que con el Padre y el Hijo recibe una misma adoración y gloria y que habló por los profetas, Creo en la Iglesia, que es una, Santa, Católica y Apostólica, Confieso que hay un solo Bautismo para el perdón de los pecados. Espero la resurrección de los muertos y la vida del mundo futuro. Amén.

• Creo que María es la Madre, siempre Virgen, del Verbo Encarnado, nuestro Dios y Salvador Jesucristo, y que por virtud de esta elección singular, Ella ha sido, en atención a los méritos de su Hijo, redimida de modo eminente, preservada de toda mancha de pecado original y colmada del don de la gracia más que todas las demás criaturas. Asociada por un vínculo estrecho e indisoluble a los Misterios de la Encarnación y de la Redención, la Santísima Virgen, la Inmaculada, ha sido elevada al final de su vida terrena en cuerpo y alma a la gloria celestial y configurada con su Hijo resucitado en la anticipación del destino futuro de todos los justos. Creo que la Santísima Madre de Dios, nueva Eva, Madre de la Iglesia, continúa en el cielo su misión maternal para con los miembros de Cristo cooperando al nacimiento y al desarrollo de la vida divina en las almas de los redimidos.

• Soy un esposo, viviendo votos de castidad y fidelidad marital a mi amada esposa, hasta que la muerte nos separe. Soy también padre de dos hermosos hijos y una nuera; soy un abuelo; soy también un hijo, un ciudadano, un servidor público y un oficial militar. Oriento todas mis responsabilidades hacia el servicio al prójimo en el Espíritu de Jesucristo, afirmando mi llamado a amar a Dios sobre todas las cosas y a mi prójimo como a mí mismo, para de este modo vivir una vida razonablemente feliz en este mundo y eterna en la felicidad del mundo futuro.

• Soy un cristiano católico, apostólico y romano. Aunque en mi peregrinar en esta la Iglesia de Cristo ha sido objeto de altas y bajas y no faltan momentos menos felices hasta el punto que le he sido infiel varias veces, ahora, en este día, en ella me apoyo. Nací hijo de la Iglesia Católica y en su seno me propongo morir con la gracia de Dios. La Iglesia Católica, con sede en Roma, la Sede de San Pedro, es la Única y Verdadera Iglesia de Cristo. No se salvarán aquellos que, habiéndola conocida como verdadera, se negasen a perseverar en ella.

• Mi regla de vida es el Evangelio de Nuestro Señor y Salvador, Jesucristo. Para estudiar, meditar, reflexionar y aplicarlo en mi vida, encuentro útiles dos adaptaciones del Evangelio. Una es antigua, la Regla de San Benito de Norsia. La otra es moderna, la Regla Bíblica de los Hermanos y Hermanas de la Caridad. No he sido perfecto en mi vivencia evangélica y muchas veces he fallado. Aun así, he resuelto levantarme y a continuar caminando bajo la luz del Evangelio después de cada caída y cada fracaso, en el Nombre de Jesús.

• Sostengo que "la fe y la razón son como las dos alas con las cuales el espíritu humano se eleva hacia la contemplación de la verdad. Dios ha puesto en el corazón del hombre el deseo de conocer la verdad y, en definitiva, de conocerle a Él para que, conociéndolo y amándolo, pueda alcanzar también la plena verdad sobre sí mismo."

• Me yergo sobre la tradición intelectual de Occidente cuyas raíces se hunden en los tiempos clásicos y la cual se fundió como noble metal en el horno del pensamiento judío y grecolatino, alimentándose de los profetas hebreos, y en su plenitud, del Evangelio de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

• Soy como pequeño cargado sobre el hombro de gigantes. Por eso, me yergo humildemente sobre los logros inefables de los grandes católicos del pasado, presente y futuro. Menciono como ejemplos a los santos Agustín de Hipona, León I, Benito, Basilio, los Gregorios (el de Nazanzio y el de Nisa) y Juan Crisóstomo; de Francisco de Asís, Domingo y particularmente, Tomás de Aquino; Juliana de Norwich, Teresa de Ávila, Juan de la Cruz, y Teresita de Jesús. Quiero mencionar también al Lord Acton, al Papa León XIII, al Cardenal Newman, Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, Jacques Maritain, Etienne Wilson, Tomás Merton, John Hardon, Michael Novak, la Beata Teresa de Calcuta, el beato Juan XXIII, Juan Pablo Magno y Benito XVI como inspiraciones y guías de mi vida y pensamiento. Quiero rendir tributo también a mis preceptores redentoristas, franciscanos, pasionistas, carismáticos, schoenstattianos y laicos que tanta diferencia hicieron en mi vida. Recuerdo con cariño a los Reverendos Padres Francisco Russo, OFMCap, Antonio Hernández, C.SsR., y Guillermo Esters de los Padres Diocesanos de Schoenstatt, ya que sin su ayuda mi adolescencia y mi entonces naciente vida espiritual hubiese sido algo bien diferente. También a los maestros de mi escuela parroquial, la Academia Santa María de Ponce, particularmente a las maestras Aida Rosa Cardé de Reyes, Margarita Rivera de Torres, y Xiomara Rodríguez de Ramírez (RIP), y muchos otros, que se dieron a la tarea de formarme y educarme en mente y alma. Quiero emular también el ejemplo de nuestro beato, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez cuyos escritos apenas empiezo a explorar pero por lo que he podido ver, vibramos en una frecuencia similar. Finalmente, deseo honrar al Arzobispo Emérito de San Juan de Puerto Rico, SER Luís Cardenal Aponte Martínez, con quien he tenido el privilegio de sostener una breve conversación epistolar via "e-mail" y cuya autobiografía, ¿Por qué a mí? me ha servido de inspiración. Tanto nuestro beato como nuestro cardenal demuestran la gran distancia que un puertorriqueño puede recorrer si este está lleno de Dios. Con esta constelación de astros, con este ejército de gigantes dándome su ejemplo, ¿cómo podré fracasar en mi empeño de seguir a Jesús?

• Soy un humanista cristiano. Como tal, me propongo conocer y apoyar todo campo del quehacer humano que ennoblezca, inspire, y rinda conocimiento verdadero. Por lo tanto, las artes y las ciencias empíricas serán también objeto de mis estudios. También en esto soy como un pequeño llevado sobre el hombre de gigantes en todos los campos del conocimiento humano, gigantes que no puedo mencionar por su gran número, mas todos aparecen de una forma u otra en mis escritos. Estos gigantes incluyen hombres y mujeres en el campo de la filosofía, literatura, historia, las artes, cosmología, astronomía, física, biología, matemáticas, ciencias espaciales y planetarias, sicología, ciencias militares, gobierno, política, derechos humanos y jurisprudencia.

• Ya que soy un humanista cristiano, pienso que tengo algo que aprender de otras tradiciones religiosas, filosofías y modos de pensamiento sin por eso comprometer mi postura básica como cristiano católico romano. Por lo tanto, escucharé lo que otros cristianos protestantes u ortodoxos quieran compartir conmigo, así como judíos, musulmanes, budistas, deístas, agnósticos, ateos, o cualquier ser humano de buena voluntad y de principios.

• Mi sentido de filosofía moral parte de mi convicción de que existen absolutos morales los cuales la razón natural humana puede discernir. Por eso dependo del Derecho Natural como un derecho precedente a la ley humana positiva para validarla o no, de acuerdo a su concordancia con el Derecho Natural. Esta es la postura que asumo cuando defiendo varios principios y derechos como inalienables e inmutables.

• Las fuentes de mi filosofía política se encuentran en los principios de la Doctrina Social de la Iglesia Católica. Estos principios son: la dignidad de la persona humana, en el que cualquier otro principio y contenido de la doctrina social encuentra fundamento, del bien común, de la subsidiaridad y de la solidaridad. Estos principios, expresión de la verdad íntegra sobre el hombre conocida a través de la razón y de la fe, brotan del encuentro del mensaje evangélico y de sus exigencias —comprendidas en el Mandamiento supremo del amor a Dios y al prójimo y en la Justicia— con los problemas que surgen en la vida de la sociedad. La Iglesia, en el curso de la historia y a la luz del Espíritu, reflexionando sabiamente sobre la propia tradición de fe, ha podido dar a tales principios una fundación y configuración cada vez más exactas, clarificándolos progresivamente, en el esfuerzo de responder con coherencia a las exigencias de los tiempos y a los continuos desarrollos de la vida social. A partir de esto, pienso que la separación de la Iglesia y el Estado constituye una ventaja para la Iglesia, pero que ello no significa que un servidor público deba de renunciar a sus creencias morales en el ejercicio de sus funciones oficiales. Afirmo que el estado está bajo el juicio del Evangelio de Jesucristo. Defiendo la separación de poderes, la existencia de balances de poder entre los poderes ejecutivos, legislativos y judiciales, y la independencia del poder judicial; también afirmo el estado de derecho, las virtudes de un gobierno republicano y democrático, y la Cultura de la Vida. Estoy convencido de que el mejor gobierno es el que gobierna menos, que todas las personas son iguales ante la ley y que cada persona, desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural, está investida de derechos inalienables, dados por el Creador, entre los que menciono los derechos a la Vida, Libertad y a la Búsqueda de la Felicidad. Sostengo que en la resolución de problemas sociales las soluciones culturales preceden a la intervención gubernamental a menos que el problema dado represente una violación directa de un derecho fundamental. Pienso que la solución colectiva de los problemas debe de efectuarse en el nivel cívico más bajo y cercano al pueblo. Sostengo que todos tienen un derecho a la autodeterminación, a la dignidad personal propia, al justo proceso de ley, a una educación cívica y valorizada, a la propiedad y sus usufructos, intercambiados en un mercado libre de bienes, servicios e ideas, y a proclamo el deber de proteger a aquellos que no puedan competir en el mercado libre por razón de edad o enfermedad.

• Creo que este mundo caído es perfectible, sino por el hombre—y de eso yo no estoy muy optimista—entonces por Dios, quien era, es y habrá de venir. Este hecho escatológico no nos absuelve de nuestra responsabilidad de hacer de este mundo el mejor mundo posible. Creo que la historia humana un día llegará a su fin, y que tendremos que rendir cuentas por cada pensamiento, palabra, obra, u omisión que hayamos perpetrado contra Dios y el Hombre, siendo juzgados de acuerdo a la medida definida por el Evangelio de Jesucristo. En ese último día, Dios validará para toda la eternidad nuestra elección a favor o en contra de Él de acuerdo a nuestras obras en esta vida terrena. Nosotros los que nos entregamos a la misericordia de Jesús esperamos vivir con Él, Padre, Hijo y + Espíritu Santo, por los siglos de los siglos, en un nuevo cielo y una nueva tierra. ¡Maranata! ¡Ven Señor Jesús!
